Steel rails are the main component of railway tracks. Its function is to guide the wheels of rolling stock forward, bear the huge pressure of the wheels, and transfer it to the sleepers. The track must provide a continuous, smooth rolling surface with minimal resistance for the wheels. In electrified railways or automatic block sections, rails can also be used as track circuits.
